THE BACKWARD WAVE AMPLIFIER, A VOLTAGE TUNABLE MICROWAVE AMPLIFIER

A new form of microwave amplifier known as the backward-wave amplifier has recently become feasible due to new discoveries. This electron tube is capable of covering a wide band of frequencies, but is actually a narrow band filter which is tunable by varying the anode voltage. In addition to the filtering effect, the tube can have as much gain in the pass band as the better known traveling-wave amplifier. The history of the backward-wave amplifier is briefly discussed, its present status is outlined, and possibilities for future work are suggested.
