A CASE STUDY OF THE FIELDS OF LARGE-SCALE VERTICAL VELOCITY AND HORIZONTAL DIVERGENCE

A study of the distribution of vertical velocity is of interest not merely because of its importance in the formation and dissipation of clouds and precipitation, but also because of its dynamical significance. The dynamical aspect manifests itself clearly in the equation for the vertical component of the absolute vortices where the so-called divergence term, twisting term, and vertical transport term all depend on the vertical motion. As is well known, omission of these terms leads to the solution that change in vortices is exclusively brought about through advection, and there is no mechanism for interaction between different strata of the atmosphere.
