摘要

The problem of producing sound welds in aluminum alloys has been one of the fore¬most objects of research attention for many years. This problem has become more acute recently with the development of the inert gas metal arc (MIG) welding process. The soundness of welds made by this process was investigated by the Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation, De¬partment of Metallurgical Research. This study included the Investigation of chlorine, aluminum chloride or other halides added to the protective gas surrounding the arc to reduce porosity. The success of these preliminary trials led to further work, sponsored by the Frank ford Arsenal, on the additions of chlorine, aluminum chloride, magnesium chloride or titanium tetrachloride to the arc area during welding.
