The systematic investigation of a series of models by the photoelastic method has been shown to be both an accurate and inexpensive method of determining the stress distribution that would exist in the prototype containers intended for the extrusion of rectangular billets.nFor the conventional round container, it was shown that the distribution of stress and pressure from the billet opening to the container was largely dependent on the cavity shape and, to some degrees, on the insert arrangement.
