AN EVALUATION OF A THERMENOL CASTING Evaluation Report 040038C(2)

A commercial casting of Thermenol, a 16% aluminum-3% molybdenum - iron base alloy, was evaluated and-structure wise was found to be unsuitable for superheated tube support plate applications. Severe casting flaws and a large columnar grained metal structure were primary causes for poor mechanical characteristics of this casting. Special tests showed that the Thermenol alloy is more resistant than Z5-20 Cr-Ni steel to vanadium induced accelerated oxidation.
