Report on a Survey of the Chemistry and Hydrography of Great South Bay and Moriches Bay Made in August, 1956 for the Town of Islip, New York

The 1956 survey was made on August 8-9 with the aid of a patrol boat furnished by the Brookhaven Police Department. A series of 25 stations were sampled, 17 of which were located along the central channel of Great South Bay and Moriches Bay from Fire Island Inlet to Westhampton. The remaining stations were located in Hart Cove and Seatuck Cove and on various parts of the Patchague, Carman, and Forge Rivers. Temperature and light transparency of the water were measured at each station and samples were taken for the subsequent analysis of dissolved oxygen, salinity, inorganic and total phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, total nitrogen, chlorophyll, and the species and numbers of planktonic algae. Tables give the results of the analyses for each station in 1956 compared with those made in 1952 and 1954.
