EXPERIMENTS ON THE NORMAL ENGRAVING OF RECTANGULAR COPPER BANDS

Normal engraving experiments were carried out on a series of strain-hardened copper bands of varying width and depth. These tests showed that increasing band width caused increasing yield point pressure, and increasing band depth caused decreasing yield point pressure. The experimental results agreed well with theoretical predictions of yield point load but did not in general confirm theoretical predictions of post-yield behavior. Arching of the band under the grooves was observed at loads slightly beyond initial yield for thin bands.
