An electrodeless single phase A. C. liquid metal pump with combined transformer is described. The principle of operation is discussed and mathematical theory deduced. A design study for a pump producing 60ft. head rise in a sodium circuit at 400°C with a flow rate of 1100 g. p.m. is included. This will have an annular pumping channel of nearly 12ins. mean diameter, 1/2in. internal width and length 1/2ins. An electrical efficiency of 30-35% can be expected with an overall efficiency of 20-25%. The pump is designed to be operated from 415 volt single phase mains; about 110 K. V. A. will be required with an overall power factor near 0.5. A note is appended on the general theory of A. C. conduction pumps.
