In this paper memory is used as a generic term for the process(es) by which the experience(s) of one or several instants are conditioned by the experience(s) of prior instant(s). By this definition memory is necessary for S to judge or adjust the velocity of one field equal to another when the two are viewed successively, Similarly, a negative after-image is a mem¬orial experience. The history of memory for translatory motion is that of perceived velocity, reviewed by J. F. Brown at the time he reported his experiments on perceived velocity.
