Weldments, prepared by the inert-gas-shielded consumable-electrode process, using commercially-available titanium and titanium alloys, have been tested for weld metal toughness over a range of temperature by means of the Vnotch Charpy impact specimen. The base materials used during this investigation consisted of two heats of unalloyed titanium (one from each of two commercial sources), two heats containing manganese and two heats con?taining chromium plus iron as the principal alloy?ing additions. The welding electrodes investigated were unalloyed titanium, except for single heats of Ti-7%Mn and Ti-4%Cr-2%Fe. Chemical analysis for interstitial elements in both filler and base meted revealed marked differences between heats. Charpy impact specimens were taken from (a) double-V butt weldments so that the cross-section under the notch consisted entirely of deposited weld metal and (b) bead-on-plate weldments so that equal por?tions of deposited weld metal and heat-affected base metal were in the test area under the notch.
