Zinc 65 was used as a tracer to determine the efficiency of chemical separations in various methods for determining microgram quantities of zinc in drinking water.nThe methods included the separation of zinc by hydrogen sulfide precipitation with subsequent nephelometric estimation of zinc ferrocyanide, and also three methods based on the extraction of zinc with dithizone solution with spectrophotometric determination of the zinc dithizonate in carbon tetrachloride.nSmall losses of zinc were found for all methods, except for the short dithizone method using a single extraction, in which about 30 percent of the zinc was lost. This loss in the single extraction method is practically compensated for by carrying standards through in exactly the same procedure as for the samples. A method based on several separations using carbon tetrachloride as a solvent, appeared most suitable for analyses requiring other than routine attention.
