Three types of cutting tool materials, i.e., ceramic, cemented carbide, and high speed tool steel, were used in the tests. The grade of each type used is the one recommended for the cutting conditions em¬ployed. The alumina based ceramic tool tips were produced within the laboratory. The cemented carbide and the high speed tool steel tips were manufactured by industrial producers. Annealed FS 4140 medium alloyed steel was used in all tests as the standard workpiece material. All tests were performed on a standard 18-inch lathe. The cutting speed ranges, in surface feet per minute, were from 415 to 1, 530 for ceramics, 150 to 480 for cemented carbides, and 60 to 130 for high speed steel tool tips.
