A COMPARISON OF TRAINING METHODS IN THE RECOGNITION OF SPATIAL PATTERNS

This report gives the results of a laboratory study in which several different methods were used to train observers to recognize complex visual patterns. In terms of performance on a criterion task it was shown that the best results were obtained by training methods involving a number of attempts to draw the pattern from memory. Significantly less effective were methods involving a verbal analysis of the patterns in terms of the interrelationships among the pattern elements.
