THEORY OF THE SERRODYNE AT LOW TRANSLATION FREQUENCIES

The serrcdyne frequency translator, which ideally employs a linear sawtooth waveform of transit-time modulation (TTM), produces an output spectrum which is predominately a single component at the desired output frequency. In practice, a certain amount of energy, however small, exists in several important undesired frequency components, as well. The un-desired spectral energy results from a number of effects, including nonlinearity in the TTM waveform, and amplitude modulation (AM) which is inherent in the generation of the TTM. The present report gives analyses of the effects of said nonlinearity and AM. A brief review of the effects of finite flyback time and of operation over a band of output frequencies is included also
