A Synoptic Study of the Intensification Mechanism of a Diffluent Trough

Pertaining to the physics of the diffluent trough, we have examined (l) the characteristic distribution of absolute vorticity and its evolu¬tion, (2) the order of magnitude and distribution of processes operative in the vorticity budget of the intensifying diffluent trough, (3) a schematic representation of the intensification mechanism of the diffluent trough and (4) the divergence of the horizontal wind, and its importance in the intensification. These essential points are retraced briefly below.
