In this respect geomagnetic data again assumes an intermediate role. Detailed analyses of past magnetograms are invaluable in attempting to understand the transient variations in the Earth's field and formulating physical theories of the various phenomena. The possible prediction of magnetic storms and minor disturbances requires an immediate analysis of current records. The problem of rapidly absorbing geomagnetic data will become acute with the advent of the International Geophysical Year when many additional observatories will be set up. This problem of analysing and interpreting geophysical data is more difficult in the case of geomagnetism since in order to gain the maximum amount of information geomagnetic data must be correlated with ionospheric and auroral data. It is not easy to carry out cross-correlation studies between different phenomena whose separate behaviour is but imperfectly understood.
