INVESTIGATION OF CENTRIFUGALLY CAST CYLINDERS FOR ARTILLERY RECOIL MECHANISM APPLICATIONS

The investigation was conducted on four thin walled centrifugally cast steel cylinders procured from a producer of such items. The cylinders which came from two different heats, gave similar yield and tensile strength results but different per cent elongation and reduc¬tion of area values. The probable cause of this difference was attributed to heat treating procedures. The cooling rates of the heat treated steels were not sufficiently rapid enough to avoid the undesirable soft constituent in the microstructure. This report constitutes only a part of the present program to investigate the utilization of centrifugal1y cast tubes. Other centrifugally cast tubes, to be procured from another manufacturer, will be examined after which a report will be forthcoming comparing the two products and evaluating their practicability in the manufacture of floating piston cylinders.
