This report 1B is a survey of the sparking characteristics and safety hazards of metallic materials. The fundamentals of sparking theory and methods of spark testing are presented. The ignition hazards associated with sparks are discussed. Attention is called to an alternate and possibly more significant source of ignition - impacts. The data indicate that sparks and impacts can result from the use of “non-sparking” materials. The authors conclude that no benefit is gained by employing non-sparking hand tools in place of steel to prevent explosions.
