In order to study the intrinsic properties of ferrites, it is necessary to use single crystals. Multicrystalline orientation is too random a structure to attempt magnetic measurements. Synthetic ferrites have been grown since 1848 using various chemical, gaseous and melt, techniques. In 1949, the Verneuil or flame fusion technique was successfully employed at Rutgers University to produce ferrite single crystals. The crystals grown to date have various imperfections such as bubbles, cracks, chemical inhomogeneities, etc.
