SURVEY OF FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF FLAME-EXTINGUISHING AGENTS

The current state of knowledge of the physicochemical means by which flames are extinguished is surveyed in this report. The report is based on the pertinent scientific literature up to May 1956 as well as visits to laboratories and investigators active in research on flames. The topics discussed herein include methods of flame extinguishment, the current status of knowledge of uninhibited and inhibited gaseous flames, the action of inhibitors, and the burning of liquids and solids including the inhibition thereof. Throughout, special emphasis has been given to research findings of fundamental nature, with the intention that this report might be helpful in planning future studies of the mechanisms of flame extinguishment.
