The approved objectives were, "firstly, to stud;and assess the physical environment, particularly the soil, water, and climatological relations;the vegetation in its economic or other relationship;the production of the sea;in a word, the 'ecology' of this representative area. A second ob¬jective was the improvement of the human ecology of the area, by discovering ways and means of increasing the quantity and variety of subsistence, and commercial crops, and of achieving greater unit production by improved fer¬tility and method;the improvement of domestic animals;and the improvement of fisheries and other products of the sea."
