THE SUBACUTE AND CHRONIC TOXICITY OF AN ANILINE-FURFURYL ALCOHOL-HYDRAZINE VAPOR MIXTURE (U)

Experimental animals were repeatedly exposed for 6 hr. a day, 5 da. a week to an aniline-furfuryl alcohol-hydrazine mixture to determine the toxic effects of repeated exposures. Rats exposed for 6 wk. to 90 total p.p.m. (44 p.p.m. of aniline, 41 p.p.m. of furfuryl alcohol, and 5 p.p.m. of hydrazine) developed cyanosis, tachypnea, lethargy, weight loss, and death during the course of the 6-wk. exposure period. Pathological changes were confined to the spleen; marked hemosiderosis and extramedullary hemopoiesis were noted. Similar exposure of mice and hamsters was without significant incident except for death in mice. Dogs exposed for the same period to 51 total p.p.m. (23 p.p.m. of aniline, 23 p.p.m. of furfuryl alcohol, and 5 p.p.m. of hydrazine) showed cyanosis, weight loss, a transient anorexia, and occasional vomiting
