SHIPBOARD CRANES AND BURTONING GEAR Evaluation of Cargo Handling Equipment in the Liberty Ship Modernization Program

This report is the first in a series dealing with the operational performance of modified cargo handling appurtenances installed on two Liberty-type ships. These shins, the SS BENJAMIN CHEW and the MV THOMAS NELSON, were included in a program of the Maritime Administration de-voted to establishing the feasibility of upgrading the performance potential of Reserve Fleet -Liberty type ships. The program called for re-engining the vessels, altering hull design, in-stalling new propulsion features, and equipping the vessels with new cargo handling gear. All of these modifications were designed to increase the capabilities of the converted ships.
