An investigation was made to determine the influence of snail amounts of lead on the tensile and fatigue properties of SAE 1018, 1045, 8620, and 4340 steel. Statistical methods were used to determine the mean fatigue limit and the mean fatigue life.nIt was found that the lead had little influence on the tensile properties, and the mean fatigue limit of the leaded steel was only significantly reduced at ultimate strengths above 150,000 psi., the notch sensitivity of the steel being little effected. At stresses above the endurance limit, leaded SAE 1018 and 4l40 tended to give longer fatigue lives on smooth specimens.
