A Study of Relationships between True and Relative Motion as Perceptual Tasks in Two display Contexts

Two variables, determining relationships between true and relative motion of two ships, were studied in each of two display contexts. These variables were: three conditions of angular difference between true courses, and two conditions of true speeds difference. In one display, relative motion was presented and the subjects were required to estimate the direction of true motion of one of the ships. In the other display, true motion of both ships was presented and the subjects estimated the direction of relative motion between the two ships,nEstimates generally were least accurate when there was the great¬est difference between stimulus and response directions. The experi¬ment is described, and other results are summarized and discussed.
