NEW APPARATUS FOR RAPID EXTRACTION OF SINGLE, DOUBLE, AND TRIPLE BASE PROPELLANTS

An apparatus was developed to extract propellants in significantly less time than the standard Soxhlet apparatus. This greater efficiency was achieved in the new apparatus by reducing the vapor path, decreasing the temperature of extraction, and increasing the frequency of solvent cycling. With the propellants tested, the new extractor was always able to effect complete extraction in one working day whereas the Soxhlet extractor required up to 3 working days in some cases.
