A graphite-filled, storage-type heater is being developed for heating nitrogen gas to high temperatures at high operating pressures. Stagna¬tion temperatures of 3500°R at stagnation pressures of 10,000 psi have been achieved. This high-temperature, high-pressure gas is being used to operate a free-jet hypersonic wind tunnel at Mach numbers from 5 to 7, with test-section diameters from 1/2 in. to 1-1/2 in.nBrass or aluminum missile nose shapes, when placed in this jet, melted in about one second, and high-speed photography was used to re¬cord the melting process. The most interesting feature of these tests was the development of an approximately similar shape during melting which was independent of the initial shapes of the noses.
