1. A water-in-oil emulsion containing bovine albumin and killed Mycobacterium butyricum was found to sensitize uniformly CFW mice to severe and fatal anaphylactic sensitivity.n2. One-tenth mg. of albumin contained in 0.2 ml. of the allergen-adjuvant mixture was-found to be an effective sensitizing dose;0.2 ml.n3. Intravenous challenge of mice 10, 14, 21, or 28 days after sensitization with the allergen-adjuvant emulsion killed 15, 16, 43, and 67 percent, respectively.n4. Sensitized mice surviving a challenge with the homologous protein (bovine albumin) were found to be desensitized when rechallenged 24 hours after the first challenge dose.n5. X-irradiation (300 r) given 1/12. 2, 4, 6, or 8 days before sensitization with bovine albumin-adjuvant mixture lessened the anaphylactic sen¬sitivity of mice challenged with the homologous protein 10 days after sensitization as measured by incidence of deaths and changes in rectal temperatures.n6. X-irradiation (300 r) given after sensiti¬zation with bovine albumin-adjuvant emulsion enhanced the susceptibility of mice to severe and fatal anaphylactic shock.n7. Nonsensitized (normal) mice challenged with bovine albumin 1 to 42 days after x-irradiation failed to show any signs of anaphyl¬axis.n8. Challenge of normal mice or x-irradiatcd mice with bovine albumin consistently resulted in an average increase of rectal temperature ot the magnitude 0.6° to 0.7° C.
