MASS PRODUClBILITY OF M9 MORTAR PROPELLANT (PHASE I)

Two pilot lots of M9 composition discs (0.010 inch web) were made for the 81mm Mortar.nData obtained during the study permitted the establishment of a tentative sequence of operations for local use.nA bottleneck operation at the cutter was the most serious problem encountered.nStudies were conducted to remedy this condition. The interior of the cutter and chute were coated lightly with silicones. Excess silicones were wiped off with a cloth to minimize the possibility of affecting ballistic characteristics of propellant. This resulted in complete free flow of propellant. Two types of silicones were used in these tests: Silicone Oil No. 200 and Dow Corning Silicone Grease. Compatibility tests of these silicones with M9 Propellant showed no reactivity.
