High Power Magnetic Field Controlled Microwave Gas Discharge Switch

A broadband magnetic field controlled, microwave gas discharge switch is described which is capable of rapidly switching high peak and average power at S band. The switch consists of two gas-filled tubes located at the junction of a rectangular waveguide Y-configuration. One or the other of the switch tubes is fired by the incident microwave power when a mag-netic field is applied to it. The high electron density of the discharge acts like a short circuit in one input arm of the Y effectively connecting the other input arm to the output.
