Cycle calculations are presented for dual-operation gas-turbine power-plants intended for use in VTOL aircraft. Cruising thrust is produced by expelling the working gas through propelling nozzles, and hovering lift is produced by expand¬ing the working gas through turbines which in turn drive thrust augmentors (fans or propellers).nA hot single-stream cycle appears to enjoy the best over-all thermo-dynamic performance if no limit is placed on the interconnecting duct temperature.nTipjet drives may be used in place of conventional power turbines to drive the thrust augmentors, but are more suited to large rotors of low disc loading.
