The proper treatment of large dam foundations is one of the major problems of modern construction. In order that the super-imposed structure may function as designed, it is essential that the foundation support the maximum loads applied to it. If the foundation rock in its natural state is inadequate, it may be possible to remedy the existing defects and improve the rock so that it will provide adequate support. The injection of grout into defective foundations is a practical method of bringing about such improvement. In pressure grouting, mixtures of cement, water, or other materials are forced into confined and inaccessible spaces to consolidate the mass as a whole. The Bureau of Reclamation uses pressure grouting primarily to eliminate seepage and to reduce uplift pressures in the foundation beneath the structure.
