National Evaluation of the Quick Test for Detection of Propellant Deterioration

The Quick Test has been successfully tried by 30 installations covering more than 350 lots representing 27 formulations for single, double and triple-base propellants.nA Stage 6 reaction in the Quick Test is shown to be an effective action point, with the single-base propellants it reflects an 80£ re¬duction in actual diphenylamine content. Such propellant is unserviceable for stock-pile loading, and continued storage would present an ever-in-creasing hazard. With the double and triple-base propellants, Stage 1 to 3 reactions are yielded by acceptably stable materials; consequently a Stage 6 reaction will (1) occur before a hazardous condition exists and (2) signal a likely point for investigative action required for estab¬lishing a cut-off criterion for these propellant types.nIn related studies, a Stage 8 reaction accompanied by the yellowing of the dry DPA-impregnated portion of the test paper is shown to signal a hazardous condition.nA model procedure for the application of the Quick Test to Field routine is given.
