Irradiation of the head of an intact mammal with 1000 - 5000 r is known to cause marked physiologic alterations but only minimal permanent histologic damage. When the does is increased to 7500 r gross necrosis of nervous tissue is frequently evident. An investi¬gation was undertaken in an attempt to measure variations in the composition of blood entering and leaving the brain and in the cerebral content of water and electrolytes following irradiation of the heads of dogs with 5000 r from a 1000 curie Cobalt 60 source.
