THE MOTION OF A BODY IN A FLUID WITH A FREE SURFACE AND IRREGULAR SOLID BOUNDARIES

A linearized theory is developed for the velocity potential of a fluid with a free surface due to: Ⅰ) motion of a thin ship over a submerged wedge, Ⅱ) a simple harmonic pressure distribution on the surface, and Ⅲ) the motion of a thin ship in a layer of light water lying on denser deeper water. The impulsive forces and moment of force on the ship, the equivalent source distribution on the surface, and the wave re-sistance of the ship, respectively, are found.
