Many combinations of furnace input materials exist which will meet a set of given furnace output requirements. The Linear Programming technique can be used to choose that feasible material combination whose material cost is a minimum. The technique can be used to calculate optimum prescriptions for individual heats, or to determine which materials to buy to stock in inventory. This paper is concerned with the “what to buy” decision;a hypothetical problem is solved on a high speed digital com-puter, and several implications relating to the problem are discussed.
