This report is a resume of the work accomplished and in progress under the terms of the present contract since its beginning on 1 January, 1958. In brief, the research problem is to obtain some knowledge about conditions that will foster the occurrence of behavior that can be called “productive nonconformity” or “productive independence.” Such behavior, observed over time, is in both a statistical and a psychological sense independent of the prevailing social norms, but nevertheless makes a positive and significant contribution to the task accomplishment of a given group or of an individual viewed in a particular social setting.
