Malaya: A New Independent Nation

In January 1958 Malayan Prime Minister Tengku (Prince) Abdul Rahman summed up the long emergency that his country had endured for the last decade. 'Since the middle of 1948,' he said, 'the country has been subjected to the tribulations of an emergency situation created by a group of adventurers whose loyalty lies outside the country in attempting to impose by force of arms a way of life that would be wholly unacceptable to and abhorred by the people of the country.' This war arises from Communist determination to detach Malaya from its close association with the free world, exploit its resources and manpower, and deprive free-world industry of a major source of vital raw materials.
