Studies of crystalline perfection of synthetic quartz specimens with double crystal X-ray monochromator indicate the following:n(a)tDifferences in pickup of impurities manifested as bands or areasndiffering in intensity of coloration in the X-irradiated material were detected as areas differing in spacing or orientation in X-rayreflection pictures.n(b)A substantial pickup of impurity is manifested in line broadening. This is due to a shift in lattice constant and unevenness of lattice spacing, particularly if the substituted atom differs greatly in size from the atom replaced. This type of defect is not shown, however, by X-ray reflection pictures.n(c)Some defects observed on X-ray reflection pictures are not correlated with changes in impurity content or observable features in the specimens.
