The Italian National Blood Centre is responsible for the coordination and technical support to the regional and national self-sufficiency in blood components and blood medicinal products. With the aim of conducting an analysis of the national and regional demand for blood medicinal products, it developed a partnership with the Office of the Italian Ministry of Health in charge of the Health Information and Statistical System. This analysis has allowed to assess the levels of achievement of self-sufficiency and the costs faced by the Italian National Health Service for the products provision. The comparison of the available data sources supported the production of this document, which is incidentally the first report published on this topic in Italy. Furthermore it represents an important tool for the adoption of adequate policies aimed to achieve regional and national self-sufficiency in blood medicinal products.
