DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDICATOR TEST PAPER TO DETECT INSTABILITY OF STORED PROPELLANTS

Three Picatinny-developed experi¬mental propellant test papers (0.1% ethyl violet, trypan red, and Benzoazurine) were stored for 3 years at Black Hills and San Jacinto Ordnance Depots with single-, double-, and triple-base propel-lants. Standard N/10 methyl violet paper was included for comparison. Added dur¬ing the third year were 75%-deteriorated IMR propellant and NPF 3g/l brilliant green test paper.nThe Benzoazurine paper was least sensitive, trypan red more sensitive, and methyl and ethyl violet and brilliant green (the latter tested with IMR only) most sensitive.
