VERBAL GENERALIZATION: A THEORETICAL RATIONALE AND AN EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE

This Study begins with a rationale for verbal generalization. The analysis starts with the established fact that an observable response, Ro , trained to a given verbal stimulus, S-v-tr' may to an appreciable extent be elicited by a related verbal stimulus, S-v-tst , used for testing the presence of generalization. The theory makes use of the assumption that a meaningful verbal stimulus typically elicits two types of response: (a) a distinctive representational response of the stimulus word which may be labelled us the stimulus word; (b) a group of implicit verbal associational responses which represent the meaning of the stimulus word.
