Ordered Semigroups in Partially Ordered Semigroups

In this note we show that a locally compact connected partially ordered local semigroup with unit contains a compact connected linearly ordered local subsemigroup (containing the unit). This is an extension of a theorem of Gleason[a]. It follows that a compact connected partially ordered semigroup with unit and zero contains a standard thread joining the zero to the unit.
