Results are reported on 15 months of work on a research project for the acquisition of basic information on new ultra refractory, oxidation-resistant materials. This work includes the development of testing apparatus.nA furnace for measuring modulus o rupture at temperatures up to 3630℉（2000℃）has been designed and assembled. Assembly of a thermal expansion apparatus, designed to be used in inert atmospheres, is awaiting the delivery of a dense silicon carbide tube. Construction of a micro furnace designed for use up to 5430℉ （3000℃）at pressures up to 1500 pounds per square inch will soon begin.
