摘要

The Naval Material Laboratory is studying the protection of uniforms and uniform systems against burns caused by the instantaneous thermal radiation released during a nuclear detonation. The Laboratory subjects employed in these studies are white rats whose skin is shaved and depilated prior to irradiation. In these studies_bars.rat skin has been irradiated for controls purposes and' for. Correlating the data obtained with results of similar studies in other laboratories. The thermal Radiation source employed in these studies was a modified carbon-are searchlight, employing a shutter to simulate nuclear vapor pulses of thermal radiation.nThe radiant exposures to produce eschar (scad) burus requiring extensive healing of the depilated rat skin were determined to be 5.7, 5.6, 6.0, and 7.5 cal/cm2 for thermal radiation pulses corresponding to nuclear detonations of 40, 250, 1000, and 10, 000 kilotons.
