This report is concerned with the solution of problems of impact or dynamic loading of a beam such that extensive plastic deformation takes place. The main purpose of the present work is to explore the usefulness in such problems of a numerical treatment based on the Timoshenke beam equations in the elastic sections, and using integration techniques of the method of characteristics. The beam is assumed to obey laws of ideal plasticity;effects of strain-hardening, of rate of strain, and of shear force on the plasticity condition are neglected.nA particular type of impact problem was solved numerically for several combinations of the load and beam parameters, and the computed results are contrasted with experimental results and with those of simple plastic-rigid analyses.
