DESIGN AND OPERATION OF A TUBE TYPE LABORATORY VACUUM FURNACE

A small vacuum furnace assembly which has been found suitable for the firing of test specimens is described. The assembly includes an inductively heated graphite susceptor, a refractory tube furnace chamber, a vacuum pumping system, and auxiliary instruments for indicating pressure and temperature within the tube. The power source for inductively heating the susceptor is a high-frequency spark gap converter.nThe furnace was employed successfully in the firing of titanium powder compacts. The maximum temperature obtained was 1400°C (2552°F), and vacuums of 10-4mm Hg were realized under such conditions.
