MAGNETO-OPTICAL EFFECTS IN FERRIMAGNETIC OXIDES

The Faraday rotation exhibited by magnetized sections of yttrium and gadolinium iron garnets was measured in the wavelength range 1 - 15u. The absorption of the yttrium garnet section in this region showed several peaks believed due to lattice vibrations. Absorption studies were made on (110), (111) and (100) sections of yttrium garnet. The data require cor¬rection for reflectivity before conclusions can be drawn. Measurements n.ade on a-Fe2O3 in the visible and near infra-red at room temperature and at -75°C indicate that absorptions occur at 16,000 cm-1 and in the range 10,000 - 13,000 cm-1. The latter absorption peak shows some fine structure.
