The maximum effect occurred between 25 and, 50 hours after exposure and endured for as long as 125 hours. From these data the authors suggested the possibility that, due to the pain thresh¬old lowering, an elevation of skin temperature within the previously UV-irradiated area to a temperature far below the normal burn threshold might be sufficient to cause thermal tissue damage. More recently, a reproducible level of tissue injury due to thermal irradiation was established (3,4), making possible the partial, test of the above hypothesis which is described in the present report.
