This research logically can be broken up into two parts, part one “Lattice Imperfections in Metallic and Ionic Crystals” and part two “The Optical Absorption Edge of Insulating Crystals at Low Temperatures,” Part one was under the direction of Arthur S„ No wick in the department of Metallurgy from 1 July 1953, to 1 October 19570 Upon the departure of Professor No wick from the faculty the direction of the project was transferred to Robert Go Wheeler in the department of Physics for the remaining period 1 October 1957, to 23 February 1959» During this latter period the project scope was directed toward the subject of part two.
